One of the region’s largest Crime and Regulatory Criminal Law Defence teams has announced the appointment of a new solicitor to assist with its heavily increasing caseload.

GHP Legal, which has offices in Oswestry, Wrexham and Llangollen and represents clients across more than ten counties in North-west England and North Wales in all types of offence including juvenile offences, has appointed Alex Mackenzie.

Alex joins GHP Legal from Howard and Byrne in York, where, as a Magistrates Court Duty Solicitor and Prison Law Solicitor, she earned a reputation for her approachable and caring manner working with juveniles, adults and IPP (Imprisonment for Public Protection) prisoners.

Over the past few years GHP Legal has built a significant specialist prison law team dedicated to looking after prisoners’ rights and providing comprehensive advice and assistance from conviction through to the end of their sentence.

With three of its 11 partners in its Crime team, the firm won the only legal aid tender awarded in North Wales to provide Prison law advice and representation in 2017. Emma Simoes, Head of Prison Law, said the contract meant the care and guidance being provided to clients during their criminal proceedings would no longer have to end at the custody stage but could continue throughout their sentence.

Speaking about her appointment, Alex said:

“Joining GHP Legal has enabled me to further pursue my interest in Prison Law work. Since qualifying as a Solicitor and working with those accused of crime, I have gained a deep understanding of the feeling of isolation that prisoners often experience, and it is this that drives me to want to safeguard their interests and help them see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
