Mercy Ships use hospital ships to deliver free, vital medical care to some of the world’s poorest countries.

Oswestry Borderland Rotary Club have been supporting nurse Melanie Langley on her six month stay on the ship in Cameroon, west Africa through a brand new bursary which was set up in memory of club member, Linda Butler, who passed away suddenly in 2016. Linda, who lived near Oswestry and nursed at the Orthopaedic Hospital, was committed to the Rotary Club principals and once served as president of the Oswestry and Borderlands branch. She volunteered on Mercy Ships, spending 3 months in Benin in 2009 and a month in Sierra Leone in 2011. Her fellow Rotarians are proud to continue with support for this extremely worthy cause and have raised substantial funds to support this bursary.

Melanie would not have been in a position to serve on the ship without this help and said, “I was thrilled to be given this oportunity to join Mercy Ships and am so grateful for this life changing bursary from Borderland.”
